Old Dyers Yard – An uncommon place in Ebeltoft

Discover a completely unique place in Northern Europe as you enter the Old Dyers Yard, free for the public from June 1 to August 31. Visit a preserved dyeing facility alongside a house and stables that look like they did when the color master lived here with his family back in the early 1900s. Besides, a beautiful old garden hides behind the buildings, and you are more than welcome to sit down and enjoy your own meal.

The dye house

Step into the beautifully restored dye house where you can see the tools and machines used for dyeing. Experience the process of coloring fabrics as you watch footage with dyer Johan Petersen at work. Access digital materials on touch screens to find out more about the craft and the life of the people living in the Old Dyers Yard.

The house and the stables

Observe how the family lived as you go from room to room in a small house that hides bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. Look at the furniture they had and the crockery and cutlery they used while enjoying the beautifully decorated chambers. You can also pay a visit to the stables where the livestock was held. Here you can spot harnesses and plows that helped the animals work at the side of their owners.

The courtyard and the garden

Hide under the large walnut tree whose fruits and leaves were used for coloring. Visit the garden, which stretches all way down to Strandvejen, or just enjoy the view of the old frigate. Walk around the various trees and plants, including the old "Æbeltoft apple tree". Take cover in the cave where the family also sought shelter on hot summer days.

The shop

Enter the small shop adjacent to the Old Dyes Yard before stepping out of the museum. Look for presents for your loved ones as you wander through the boutique. Here you can buy yarn, old toys, art items, and many more, as we have made sure to have something for all tastes.
